Keep sidewalks bin-free

How to notify users, building caretakers and companies handling waste bins exactly when the waste collection truck will be coming by?

THE CONTEXT

In Paris, almost 500 trucks pull out of waste processing facilities to collect rubbish on the streets of Paris every day. Private waste bins legally shouldn’t stay more than 75 minutes on the streets, for sanitary reasons, but bins cluttering public areas (pavements, entrance halls, etc.) are still common, either because the trucks have not yet emptied them or because nobody has returned them to storage. Indeed, the waste collection interval is often over 4 hours long.

THE CHALLENGE

The objective of the challenge was to predict waste collection time thanks to AI, and alert building caretakers via text messaging of exact collection times in order to reduce the occupation of public areas. Partners provided the following data sets: digital collection routes, truck GPS coordinates, bin number, collection date and time, GPS location. The experimentation took place in Paris' 14th district and has been implemented since.

THE STARTUP

Craft.ai provides AI as a service and automated machine learning tools for individuals and companies. They enable product & operational teams to quickly deploy and run explainable AIs. Craft ai decodes data streams to deliver self learning services.

THE SOLUTION

All bins are now equipped with a microchip that records the exact waste collection times. Craft.ai used its artificial intelligence models to learn from these millions of data and forecasts waste collection times. SUEZ’s platform "Monservicedechets.com" was then used to register the end user’s forecasted collection times and send notifications in case of any delays at each address. Thus buildings caretakers can know exactly when to take in an out the bins. The solution and text message notification services have been activated in the 14th arrondissement and adopted by dozens of beta users. Prediction interval reduced to 2 hours with a 95% certainty instead of an average 4 hour interval This solution can be scaled to any city with a similar waste collection system. The solution can also be an opportunity for companies such as SUEZ and could become a new feature of to differentiate their services.
